Unit 2207
Category: layer dug in 1997
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Building fill
Data Category Information: none
Discussion: This was an arbitrary level which went down to a harder uneven surface of baked clay/daub/plaster. A visible wall is along the west line and this seems to be collapsed building fill. There were few artifacts found in the dry sieve (and only 10 liters were left over to sieve after samples were taken). [This was later revised by further excavation of the unit. --JB] On the plan the hatched area in the north was not excavated. The unexcavated area is ~ 73 cm x 15 cm. Clay object found (2207 x 1) but no coordinates were given because I was unsure exactly where it came from -- it came in a large bunch of dirt ready to go into the sieve. It is approx. 2 cm in diameter and very fragile. A figurine of clay (2 - 2.5 cm) was found in the fill along the north wall.
This unit was enlarged in 1998 to try to define the edge of the West wall. The unit is still composed mostly by filling material which has become more compact when digging layers 40 cm from the surface. The unit does not have many materials inside, only small bone fragments. A light concentration of charcoal was found 40 cm from the surface and a flotation sample has been taken. (See drawing on back of unit continuation sheet 1998 for location of flot sample #6)

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
X Finds Material: nothing recorded

Unit description: Building fill space 86, arbitrary layer. Small-medium unit. Similar amounts of sheep- and Bos-size fragments. Sheep-size mostly long bones fragments. Bos-size ribs, long bones and many horn core fragments. ?Red deer antler fragment. One fragmented large Ovis astragalus. Two human bones. Mostly cranial and long bones; few ribs, practically no vertebrae or feet. Quite fragmented but some larger pieces. Surface condition generally degraded from proximity to ground surface. Not your typical midden. May include remains of installations and special deposits, but very disturbed and probably mixed. Samples 2 and 6 >4 mm flotation 100% sorted; only diagnostics recorded, rest as flot frags. Sample 2 is not huge and has lots of biggish chunks (mostly horn core and human), quite like the dry sieved. Sample 6 is much smaller and has smaller pieces. Last number = 111Figurine Records: Yes
