Unit 22607
Category: Layer dug in 2015
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: mortar
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: mortar; Deposition: homogeneous
Description: This unit is nearly impossible to distinguish from the u. 22603, the mud brick of wall F. 7708, due to the degree of burning in sp. 504. Both are loose and crumble at the touch.
This is inaccurate - the firing turned the mortar rock-hard while turning the organic-rich mudbrick loose and fragile. Unsure what PC was considering mortar in 2015. (KK 2017)
Discussion: This unit represents the presumed mortar that was originally applied in the construction of wall F. 7708, though the conflagration of B. 131 damaged the wall so it cannot at this stage be distinctly identified as separate from the mud brick.
The mortar (22607) exists only in the northern part and the smaller part in the southern part of the wall F.7708. In the middle of the wall, the mortar is absent because the wall F.7708 is truncated and remained only one course of mudbrick. (AFK 2017).
The mortar is in fact distinct - two rock-hard fired clay coarses in the middle of the tall-standing northern part of the wall. Interestingly, there is no mortar between the bottom 3 coarses of mudbrick. Mortar (22607) was cut into in its lowest course on the E side to create a niche (F.8372, cut U.23112) (KK 2017)
