Unit 23134
Category: Layer dug in 2017
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: collapsed wall
Data Category Information: In Situ: non in-situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick&mortar; Deposition: homogeneous
Description: Brick & mortar - exca. as one unit but sampled separately.
Discussion: Collapsed wall, laying horizontally & covering most of the W side of Sp. 634 -> Sp.504 during the transition between buildings. Presumably represents the upper courses of the western wall of B.139. A few scraps of coarse 'side room' style plaster were noted on the bottom side (originally internal face). Several courses of brick and mortar have maintained structural cohesion despite the fall, particularly in the westernmost (ie originally lowest) part of the wall. This suggests that the demolition of the wall was neither a slow process of decay nor a violent toppling, but a controlled event; chronologically, all this recommends that we situate the collapse more closely in time to the initial closure of B.139 than to the likely period of open-area use (see US 23084 & 23027) and construction of B.131 that followed.
