Unit 23445
Category: Layer dug in 2017
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Floor,Platform surface
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: raised area (platform); Material: mix (dark grey&white); Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)
Description: U23445 was identified and partially scraped (this is how X1 was found), but was not fully excavated. It was found in patches on Platfrom F 7638, directly on top of room infill U23836.
Discussion: U23445 was very badly preserved. It was identified in patches on room-infill U23836. It can be seen in magnification of the end-of season orthophotos and models (see ref. space 95). We had only start scraping when X1 was identified, but soon decision was made for U23445 either not to be excavated or excavated along with room infill U23836. However, the aim of the excavations for space 94 was to reach room infill to reveal the top of the walls of the building underneath. As this had been achieved for western space 94, i.e. the areas covered by Platforms F7638 and F7637, a decision was made for the focus of the excavation to be shifted to the eastern part of space 94. Therefore, U23445 remained mostly revealed, but unexcavated.
Consistency: loose
Colour: black and grey
Texture: Sand
Bedding: Thin parallel layers
Inclusions: Tiny flecks of charcoal
Post-depositional Features: Construction of floors above; U23445 is directly made on roomfill; it has only survived in sporadic patches across the area of Platform F7638. It is better preserved in the East where it is severely burnt.
Basal Boundary: Constructional, diffused, faint, irregular, uneven.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
