Dimensions: c 6 m long x 0.4 m wide (max) 

 

Discussion: Remaining part of foundation infill left in section at SW corner of building; during excavation it became apparent that this layer was much cleaner than the part to the east, and this is very clear in section too. It is now felt that this should be distinguished from the eastern half of foundation infill so this is marked on the plan by a solid line, even though the western layer overlies the eastern one - the continuation of the latter under the former is indicated by a dotted line, but in either case the unit number refers to the 2 m grid, & some wide therefore contains a mixture of both deposits. 

 

Execution: pick & trowel 

Condition: hot & dry 

Consistency: moderately weak 

Colour: 10 YR 7/4-6/4 very pale brown to light yellowish brown 

Texture: silty loam 

Bedding: massive 

Inclusions: small fragments <1% charcoal (<5mm) c 1%; clay fragments (up to 20mm) 2-5% 

Post-depositional Features: roots / salts <1% 

Basal Boundary: prominent, very sharp, flat to slightly wavy
