Discussion: This singel course of mortar was all that remained in what was left in Mellaaet partially excavated wall 68. It was marked by its richness in organic inclusions.
Recognition: Distinctive colour and texture. Firm grey mortar.
Definition: Clearly defined from bricks within the wall.
Execution: Trowel.
Condition: Very dry and crumbly.
Consistency: Fairly loose.
Colour: Brownish grey.
Texture: Ashy silt.
Bedding: Massive (but mixed).
Inclusions: 8% charcoal (flecks and small pieces); 2-5% plaster (flecks and small pieces); <2% plant silicats; <2% burnt clay (small pieces); <1% bone (small pieces).
Post-depositional Features:
Basal Boundary: A sharp constructional basal boundary with a marked contrast between the bricks and mortar. The interface between these was smooth and fairly level and marked with salt crystalization.
