Interpretive Categories: Foundation Layer,Mortar

Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: re-used brick&mortar; Deposition: homogeneous

Dimensions: 1.02 x 0.34 x 0.09 m

Discussion: This deposit initially seemed to run beneath 96/68, 2862/2863 and 98/272 forming a foundation layer for all of these (and making life much simpler!). On excavation, only the eastern extent of the deposit was clearly defined although a thinner layer of greyish brown material did cover the area to the West but this seems to be firmer, browner and more homogeneous. If these form two separate deposits, the 2854 might end at (a) (see sketch plan) and form a mortar / foundation layer for the walk running to the north and east from here. A similar layer of material was land at the base of the upper wall to the north of 2854 (273). This is at a lower level and does not appear in section to run into 2854 but this wall and that beneath 96/69 have stumped considerably at their southern ends and I think that it's possible that 2854 and the layer at the base of 273 were continuos at the tune that the wall was built.

Recognition: Clearly different colour and texture.

Definition: Very clear.

Execution: Trowel and pick.

Condition: Dry and crumbly.

Consistency: Compacted but friable.

Colour: 10 YR 6/2 Light brownish grey.

Texture: Ashy silt.

Bedding: Mixed - fairly homogeneous but large lumps of clay and plaster.

Inclusions: 2% charcoal (flecks and small pieces); 4% clay (flecks, small and medium sized pieces); 4% plaster (flecks and medium sized chunks); <2% bone (small pieces); <2% plant silicats.

Post-depositional Features: Salt encrustation.

Basal Boundary: Sharp towards the eastern extent of the deposit but elsewhere less distinct. The interface was smooth, sharp and marked by salt encrustations to the east of the deposit, but further west it was far less distinct and more uneven.
