Discussion: Ash and charcoal rich mortar in wall [70]. Only a single course remained and spread over both the bricks of wall [70] (2867) and those of wall [56] running from north to south to the east of [70]. This suggests that the final building stages of these walls were contemporary. The material remaining (288) between 96/56 and 96/61 is very similar to (2868)and it is possible that the same material was used to fill the gap between these walls and to provide the course of mortar which joined them. As this is not certain (288) was excavated separately. A layer of mortar (2868) also ran between [70] and wall [88] to the north and may have been used to bond these together. The high bone content of this mortar was a distinguishing feature.

Recognition: Clear colour/textural difference. Much more ashy and mixed that the brick material.

Definition: Sharp/distinct - marked by salt incrustation.

Execution: Trowel and mattock.

Condition: Very dry.

Consistency: Firm (but looser that brick 2867).

Colour: 10 YR 7/2 Light grey.

Texture: Ashy silt.

Bedding: Massive with many inclusions.

Inclusions: 5% charcoal (flecks, small and medium sized pieces); 5-8% bone (flecks to large pieces including scapulae); occasional hackberries; <2% burnt clay; <2% shell.

Post-depositional Features: Some salt encrustation

Basal Boundary: The basal boundary was clearly defined and sharp with a marked contrast betwenn bricks and mortar. A smooth/sharp interface
