Unit 2882
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: mortar
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: mortar; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.74 x 0.36 x 0.12
Discussion: Two layers of mortar in what remained of a wall excavated by Mellaart [273]. Although at one point I thought that the first layer of mortar might have extended across the top of [70], before the wall to the north [69] had slumped. Infact the materials of (2882) and (2854) (the possible equivalent above [70] were very different, so it is not possible to relate [273] to the walls to the south stratigraphically. The first/lowest layer of mortar was laid above a layer of infill between [88] and [69] which could have been levelled to this height before wall [273] was built.
Recognition: Clear colour and textual difference in section
Definition: Marked definition between 2881+2882 in wall [273]
Execution: Pick and trowel
Condition: Very dry and crumbly, morning sun
Consistency: Very firm/compacted
Colour: Light greyish brown 10YR 6/2
Texture: Ashy silt
Bedding: Massive with lots of inclusions
Inclusions: 8% charcoal (flecks and small pieces); 2% plaster (flecks); 2% plant silicates ; 2% bone (small pieces); <2% burnt bone (flecks); 2% clay; 2% sand; occasional hackberries
Post-depositional Features: Some salt encrustation and animal burrowing. A very weathered surface.
Basal Boundary: The basal boundary was sharp and constructional although in places, the mortar (2882) was closelyh bonded with the brick (2881). The interface between these was smooth and ;evel, and makred with salt crystalisation.

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
