Unit 30050
Category: Layer dug in 2016
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Rim of later phase of use of hearth 7957.
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: hearth; Deposition: homogeneous
Description: Unit came away from lower deposit very easily and in large lumps. Upper surface was mid grey . However, excavation revealed a mid brown red colour that oxidized quickly to light brown red. Deposit was scorched on north face at south
Discussion: Forming three sides of a rounded rectangle (North, west and South) the east 'tips' of 30050 were rounded and curved slighty southwards (at north) and northwards (at south). Thus the east side of this r ectangle was open. Never-the-less 30050 defined an internal space 0.56m N-S and 0.50m E-W. 30050 overlay a clay repair (30054) to this space along its west edge. Which in turn overlay 30064 which followed same line an 30050 above it. Therefore, if F7957 is a hearth then 30050 is its 'edge'
