Unit 30051
Category: Layer dug in 2016
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Tertiary fill of a hearth F.7957
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Description: Oxidized to mid red brown upon excavation
Discussion: Within Hearth F.7957, U30051 sealed lining 30064 and was very similar to the overlying clay silt 30048. Other than the light brown/ red colouration there were no other indications of exposure to heat and this may be the result of the conflagration that consumed B.131. Delimited by U30064; U 30051 has been classified as a fill. Very clear interfaces at 30049 and 30048 may indicate a significant gap in depositional episodes (that allowed the surface of 30051 to become consolidated). Lack of scorching suggests that 30051 is not a deposit resulting from use of F7957 as a hearth. However, it did overlap the eastern edge of F7957 where there was a gap in 30050 (a later edge to F7957) and 30064 is very eroded. The former may suggest that 30051 was a tertiary deposit that accumulated during a period of disuse but the latter suggests that 30051 was raked out of F7957 either during the use life of the hearth or as a part of the repair/reuse of the feature. Was 30051 then the base of a second phase of use of F7957.
