Unit 30087
Category: Layer dug in 2016
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: make-up layer
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: raised area (platform); Material: mix (dark grey&white); Deposition: composite (floors/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation); Basal Spit: unpainted
Discussion: A rectangular depsoit that appears to have been deposited primarily to supply a containing layer fo r the hearth F.7957. Sealing earlier deposits (30093, 30080, 32327) that were related to an earlier hearth there was no indication as to why this deposit was laid against the east edge of Platform F.7951. the location was dictated by the presence of the earlier herth but why was it necessary to create a raised area associated with the hearth? An earlier deposit 32338, a fragment of an the early east wall of the earlier hearth, and the scorching of plaster surface 32389, show that the early hearth sat directly upon this early surface (32389).
So, why was the surface raised but only in the west of the raised area? As an activity platform for later hearths? Had Platform F.7951 fallen out of use (a later later 30055 sealed structrual elements of the Platform as well as constituting part of later use hearth structure) and 30087 related to an element of B.131 that did not survive?
30087 = a raised area associated with Hearth F.7957
