Description: Loose. Dark almost black coloured layer. Ash layer, it shows very much ash character ( 90%) Although consist other material, such as charcoal (.2cm . 10%) brick pieces and lumps (.5cm and .5%). Thick grey clay lumps is also visible occasionally, where are situated towards the bottom of the layer it is fine and granular and hard. To say about its plasticity and stickiness. Post deposition features visible as it can occur naturally with an ash layer Basal boundary is not very clear.
Unit was dry sieved, but unsure of amount.
Discussion: This thick layer of ash band lies East West direction as it was illustrated in the section drawing. In this alignment ash layer starts from both ends very thin and towards the middle again this thick ash layer starts to mix with the bricky texture but still they are placed on the ash layer. When excavated by c.0.1m it became clear that (3021) was in fact at least four separate layers (3053), (3054), (3055) and (3056) Dry Sieve Information: Probably some dry sieve but amount unknown

Unit description: A medium-sized unit, with >4mm flot material included. Surface condition is chalky/ashy on some of the bone, particularly the larger pieces, and with plastery material/film/salts(??) adhering to surface. It is not particularly weathered, and therefore does not seem to be surface worn, but maybe deposited in other conditions (within building material?). A small proportion of the bone is burnt black. Size of pieces ranges from large - 25cm- to very small (1cm) fragments. Of cattle size there are long bone frags, a large rib, skull frags, horncore frags and teeth frags. Diagnostics are cattle humerus and tibia. Of sheep size, there are long bone fragments, ribs, few vertebrae, and diagnostics include ulna, astragalus, and maxillary teeth. The unit appears to have a certain integrity in condition. It doesn't seem to be trampled, since pieces are large. But the elements are very mixed and do not suggest any particular processing stage/activity, e.g. not primary processing, not a consumption pattern. The assemblage looks more like midden material, perhaps reworked for levelling/fill?? The mixed appearance in terms of condition and components may derive from the fact that it was realized from the section that several distinct layers were excavated together as one unit because they were not distinguishable as they went down. Hence the impression of multiple origins may reflect these multiple deposits. Last number = F55Figurine Records: Yes
