Unit 30331
Category: Layer dug in 2013
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Pit infill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: pit
Discussion: Surrounding this unit were several plastered (partially plastered) areas, including wall plaster on the west wall, which also descended to a horizontal orientation, becoming what is looking like remnant floor plaster. To the east some more plaster created a boundary, helping to identify the unit as its grey/brown color contrasted with the surrouding white.
The unit was originally interpreted as a make-up layer, understandably so, based on the above outline of the surroundings. But no floor appeared as we worked down and following the outline plaster led to dead ends, where the plaster would simply stop/disappear.
The fill boundary (in section) is somehwat arbitrary despite having to follow the grey-brown region defined in the first paragraph. The choice is reinforced however by the fact that the plaster outline of what might be a crawl hole descends to where the unit's NW edge makes contact with the western wall (and likewise with the crawl hole's plaster outline). Excavation should continue, as the present boundary is arbitrary and was arrived at due to time contraints.
Not fully excavated in 2013. The total volume of deposit will have to be added to if the excavation of this unit is taken up again.
