Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: This is a small-medium unit which forms part of the cluster of bone in the external space south of Building 1, North area. It is similar/same (? ) as 3037. All of the bone is burnt (brown and black, hence low temprature), and this appears to have occurred post-depositionally, and can suggest that the deposit was in place when the south part of house 1 burnt. Some elements are likely to have been in articulation (e.g. the sheep left tibia, navicular-cuboid, metatarsal) and although parts of the limb are missing, this may well be because the unit was only dug arbitrarily (ie. there may be more beneath wall of building to south). On the other hand, the navicular-cuboid shows dismemberment cuts on one leg, so maybe the upper part of the limb is not present elsewhere. Some identifications of 'sheep' are made by their association/articulation with firmly identified pieces. There is a single cow-sized pelvis fragment, and some undiagnostic 07-sized pieces (although these are unburnt and seem very different from rest of unit?). Otherwise, all is sheep and sheep-sized: horn core, humerus, tibia, metacarpal, metatarsals, cervical vertebrae (probably articulating), and teeth. The sheep limb bones are from a young animal; the teeth from a very old animal, hence more than one individual. The unit is unusual in having pieces likely to hve been in articulation. They are also complete (not intensively processed for marrow/grease), and hence appear to derive not from everyday food, but maybe a feast - maybe included as a foundation deposit since it is below wall ?? There are two pathological bones: one cervical vert has a path. articulation, and the sheep horncore is indented at base. Sample 2 >4mm flotation 100% sorted, recorded completely. It clearly contains more of this same deposit, not improved by its trip through the flotation machine. Nearly all is burnt. Most is sheep-size, although there is what is probably more of the large mammal pelvis and a few other odd bits of large mammal. Mostly this seems to be vertebrae and skull, with some odd tarsals and sesamoids that no doubt go with the sheep's feet in the rest of the unit. There is also a very young ulna. And some microfauna and quite a bit of small fish, burnt like the rest so there when House 1 burned. Some of this is probably an admixture of fill/midden, but most seems to derive from the same putative feasting event. Sample 4 >4m flotation 100% sorted, recorded completely. it has a single bone, a rib fragment; not surprising since it was only half a liter. This shows similar burning to other bones in the unit.
