Unit 3141
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Foundation mat.,infill
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: pise-like; Deposition: heterogeneous
Dimensions: 0.39 x 0.16 x 0.09
Discussion: (3141) consisted of a layer of compacted clay and plaster chunks intermingled with softer, ashier lenses, with no clear surrounding matrix. It could be seen as part of an accumulation of dumped material in the niche between walls [71] and [69], similar to the overlying material (3109) but it's distinct composition made it seem like a distinct episode within this. The builders of the walls above could have deliberately chosen to pack this space with these hard solid materials to provide a reasonable foundation
Recognition: Distinguished by its very high plaster/clay content
Definition: The definition between it and the brick to the south of [71] was clear that between it and (3119) above, was more blurred
Execution: Trowel
Condition: Dry
Consistency: Firm
Colour: Varies: 2.5 Y 8/1 - white; 2.5 Y 7/2 0 Light grey; 7.5 YR 8/2 - Pinkish white; 10YR 5/2 - Greyish brown; 10 YR 5/4 Yellowish brown
Texture: Clayey chalky ashy
Bedding: Massive
Inclusions: 8% charcoal (in ashy lenses); 5% bone (in ashy lenses); 2 % plaster flecks (in ashy lenses); <2% clay (in ashy lenses)
Post-depositional Features: Salt encrustation
Basal Boundary: The basal boundary was indistinct. The lumps of clay and plaster that it was made up of were embedded in the soft ashy material beneath and the surface between the two was very irregular. As a result, I might have dug into (3154)
