Unit 3161
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Infill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: foundation cut; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.75 x 0.72 x 0.11 m
Discussion: 3161 represents a layer of dense, mixed material dumped above the brick of wall 278 and some softer ashy material infilling the space to the south 3173. It is difficult to tell at this stage whether it could have been laid as a deliberate foundation layer for wall 278 to the North, or if it is the result of an away of mixed rubbish accumulating in a corner of walls from the various activities going in the buildings around this space.
Recognition: Similar surface appearance to 3154 but a dense, more clayey composition, with large, burnt brick lumps.
Definition: Defined by walls 88 to the North and 58 to the West but more diffucult to define at its Eastern edge.
Execution: Trowel and hand pick.
Condition: Slightly moist.
Consistency: Firm.
Colour: Varies: matrix 10YR 6/4 light yellowish brown; plaster 2.5Y 7/3 pale yellow; burnt clay 5YR 4/2 dark reddish grey.
Texture: Sandy, clayey silt.
Bedding: Massive.
Inclusions: 10% plaster (some large chunks); 5-10% burnt clay (large chunks); 5% charcoal (flecks, small and medium sized pieces); 2% plant silicats; occasional obsidian and hackberries; 5% briken brick.
Post-depositional Features: Salt encrustation and animal burrowing.
Basal Boundary: A clear sharp basal boundary: constructional to the North, where it lay above the brick material 3172 of wall ; to the South and West, it lay above a soft ashy, charcoal rich deposit. The interface between these varied but was generally fairly smooth and level.
