Unit 3145
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: floor and packing
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: mixed; Deposition: composite (floor/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)
Dimensions: 0.92 m EW x 0.27 m NS x c. 30 mm thick
Discussion: This unit is one of the layers above 3135 and is of the same material as 3144 and 3146. The unit is a clearly defined floor level consisting of several very thin plastered layers (depth c. 2-8 mm), and a deeper infill layer of brownish material (5 mm). The floor layer breaks away relatively easily though the distinction is not always clear due to some erosion and weathering. The basal surface inclines sharply towards wall, plunging down beneath it, possibly as a result of the weight of the walls.
Recognition: floor level distinguishable by difference in colour primarily
Definition: edges visible but crumbly and eroded up to wall F.263
Execution: layer by leaf trowel
Condition: dry and crumbly
Consistency: soft and crumbly
Colour: mostly 10 YR 6/2 light brownish/grey
Texture: clayish silt
Bedding: layered, inclined to S wall, surface of unit smooth but uneven with several pitted and cracked areas on the general incline several plaster layers, one brown infill, 5-8 mm
Inclusions: 2 % charcoal
Post-depositional Features: very small amount of salt
Basal Boundary: abrupt and fairly distinct anthropic layer, smooth and inclined, S. surface smooth
