Unit 32344
Category: Layer dug in 2016
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: floors
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: raised area (platform); Material: dark grey clay; Deposition: multiple; Basal Spit: unpainted
Discussion: Series of plaster floors on platform 7950 (4-5 replasterings). Burnt/heat altered which has resulted in the preservation of some organic remains (sample 3). Impressions of botanical remains (possibly straw or chaff) also visible on some of the surfaces which may be part of the construction material or debris collecting on surface before replastering. Floors are sterile otherwise.
Prioritized (along with other floors 32365 & 32371) to find out more about organic material-is this the remnants of matting, part of the construction process, or the remnants of processing/craft activities?
Feedback showed that the material was mostly grass & leaves and is incorporated into the matrix of the plaster floor, so it looks like this material has been added as part of the construction process, as a temper or binding agent within the plaster rather than matting or the result of processing activities.
Compared with the other prioritized floors, the latest ones had the highest amount of preserved organic remains, perhaps indicative of better preservation in the layers most exposed to burning in this building.
Consistency: Firm-friable (more friable in heavily burnt areas)
Colour: Light-mid grey
Texture: slightly silty plaster
Bedding: laminated
Inclusions: occasional phytoliths/botanical remains
Post-depositional Features: Burrowing
Basal Boundary: Diffuse, clear in places
