Unit 3319
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Mortar
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: mortar; Deposition: homogeneous
Dimensions: 0.20 x 0.19 x 0.07 m
Discussion: 3319 represents a thin layer of softer ashier material which lay in between the upper 2 courses of wall 58 and both the lower courses of the same wall and the upper course of wall 278 to the East. It doesn't seem to fulfil any clear structural purpose. It could represent some of the mortar of 2781, spilling over the lower bricks of 58 if these were built at the same time. This seems unlikely as the return wall of 278 is only a metre to the East, creating a strange small space. Alternatively, it could just be a path of midden deposit which fell from the roof of an adjacent building or blew from the area around during the courses of building.
Recognition: A soft greyish material which was clearly different to everything else around.
Definition: Defined by its difference from the surrounding material.
Execution: Trowel.
Condition: Dry.
Consistency: Friable.
Colour: 10YR 5/2 Greyish brown.
Texture: Ashy silt loam.
Bedding: Massive.
Inclusions: 5% charcoal (flecks and small pieces); <2% shell (flecks); <2% clay (flecks); 2% plaster (flecks and small pieces).
Post-depositional Features: Salt encrustation.
Basal Boundary: A clear, sharp, anthropic basal boundary. 3319 lay directly above the brick of two walls. The interface was smooth and level.
