Unit 3383
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: oven floor
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: baked; Deposition: single
Discussion: Oven floor for F.268. Seems broken in N but if it is truncated it is in antiquity as deposit (3147)=(3157) overlay lip of this break (raking out of ashes). Slopes down fairly steep to W and N, probably the result of later dumping.
Recognition: Seen in section from oven entrance last year and read in plan when fills were excavated (when oven still intact) a very hard surface was reached. Oven walls were removed and it was seen in plan (well 1/2 of it) as a grey smooth (although very finely pitted surface with occasional small cracks on it) the deposit changes below to less compacted and yellow orange. Surface slopes down to N and W.
Definition: Within surrounds of oven. Looks broken to N but if truncated it is not known what by.
Execution: Trowel, 1/2 sectioned.
Condition: Dry, covered.
Consistency: surface ?, below compact
Colour: surface; 10 YR 6/1 grey, below; 10 YR 6/4 light yellowish brown
Texture: coarse sand 30%, burnt clay 10%
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: phytoliths and voids of phytoliths 20 %, salts <3 mm 5% and 1% salt concretes hollow tube shaped objects <3 mm long, possibly salt concreted insect burrow?
Post-depositional Features: burnt surface, salts
Basal Boundary: surface; anthropogenic/anbrupt/very slight pitting and occasional small cracks but generally smooth and even/slopes down to E and N, basal boundar; abrupt/smooth/anthropogenic/curving up at E about 45 degrees but rounded corner
