Unit 3631
Category: layer dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: outer oven structure
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: pise-like; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: Brown clayey silt material, fomring deliberate backfill of cut (3700) but also built up to form the outer structure of the oven F.252. Could detect no difference between the material of the upper structure and that filling the cut, so appears that backfilled the cut and built the oven at the same time.
Recognition: Visible from start of seaon and recognisably outer structure of oven.
Definition: Clear, against wall to the E.
Execution: Trowel and handpick.
Condition: Dry to slightly moist.
Consistency: firm to friable
Colour: 10 YR 5/4 yellowish brown (dry)
Texture: clayey silt
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: occ. >2% charcoal flecks, 1 small frag of bone
Post-depositional Features: 2-5% salt flecks through unit + at basal boundary, fine roots remaining between (3631) and the wall to the E
