Unit 3705
Category: Cluster dug in 1998
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: ash dump
Data Category Information: Location: midden; Material: charcoal; Deposition: secondary deposition
Dimensions: 60-80 by 50 by 1-2 cm
Discussion: Charcoal cluster appears to be a single dump up against the outside of the W wall of space 117 and likely to have been dumped from the roof of this space (?) I initially thought that the deposit continued down into some grey ashy material and began to include this in the flotation sample. However, it was decided that this was actually a separate layer. So (3705) sample for flotation is slightly contaminated with hte layer beneath.
Attached on a nail near the deposit was '(2777) Dump'-?
Recognition: Small black cluster of charcoal in E end of space 115, up against wall.
Definition: Defined on N edge by gradual fading out, E edge by W wall of space 117, fades out on S and W edge.
Execution: Revealed working a mattock and excavated with trowel.
Condition: Good.
Consistency: charcoal, soft and smooth when crumbled friable
Colour: black
Texture: smooth and soft
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: all charcoal = 100%, rare bone
Post-depositional Features: n/a
Basal Boundary: distinctness-abrupt, top ashy part becomes more dense near the bottom of the interface, actual underlying layer contains a lot of grey 'ashy' inclusions/patches and some charcoal, but is quite distinct; contrast is distinct/prominent; form is fairly smooth and sloped down E to W, and N to S

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.
