Discussion: Ashy dark grey material, originally thought that this represented uppermost deposit of a small hearth but on excavating to W of the baulk subsequently found oven cut into infill, this appears to be on very E edge. Same as 3977? backfill material.
Recognition: Recognised on removal of (3778). Clear that some greyer ashy material over N part of (3778).
Definition: Clear to E, although not noticed pre-exc. of (3778) as the grey ashy layer not obviously different to the apparent infill layer.
Execution: Trowel.
Condition: Dry.
Consistency: friable
Colour: 10 YR 4/1 dark grey (dry)
Texture: clayey silt (high % ash)
Bedding: massive?? or very fine layers??
Inclusions: 5% charcoal flecks; 2% shell frags.
Post-depositional Features: occ.2% salt flecks?
Basal Boundary: abrupt?/distinct/smooth/flat?
