Discussion: Scorched layer beneath floor of fire installtion F.290, may in fact be same material as floor but varied due to differential burning. Burnt deposit seen on N facing side of EW baulk thought to be same as this FI but on removal of baulk realised it was a different feature. 

Recognition: Crumbly dark reddish brown scorched deposite revealed underneath and surrounding fire installation floor (3691). 

Definition: Continues into baulk in N and half section in niche in W. 3/9/98 remnant in baulk excavated. 

Execution: Trowel. 

Condition: Hot. 

Consistency: loose to friable, becomes more compact towards base 

Colour: 10 YR 3/3 dark brown 

Texture: silt 80% medium sand 20% 

Bedding: massive 

Inclusions: phyotlihs 20% towards base occ. frags of oven lining up to 0.05 m 5%, rare charcoal flecks <1% 

Post-depositional Features: scorched 

Basal Boundary: diffuse/curved/anthropogenic
