Dimensions: 0.85 m E-W x 0.46 m N-S x 0.02 m thick 

 

Discussion: Smooth, hard, curved surface, ovalshaped. Pale orange/yellow on surface fading through light grey to mid-brown reddish brown.

Floor of fire installation F.290, it begins to curve up at W end to form walls of feature but this is the only place they survive (in niche). 

 

Recognition: Smal part revealed in plan at end of last year. Fully revealed ( except N extent going back into baulk) after (3625) (oven demolition) was removed and after some of niche/crawl hole was excavated the last deposit on top of this being (3687). 

Definition: Oval shaped continung into L.O.E (baulk in N) and into niche/crawl hole where it rises up to from an angle. 

Execution: Area in niche left in situ (1/2 section) until next year. After the rest had been archived chemical analysis x 3, phytolith sampled and 7 archaeo. mag. sampled with a pen knife there was not much left to do except sweep the remnant into a bag for flot. 

Condition: Hot. 

Consistency: hard 

Colour: 10 YR 8/3 very pale brown to 10 YR 6/1 grey to 10 YR 3/2 very dark greyish brown 

Texture: clay 90% silt 10% 

Bedding: massive (although differential by heat) 

Inclusions: freq. 15% small stones, 1-2 mm, frequent 30% phytoliths <3 mm long 

Post-depositional Features: scorched 

Basal Boundary: anthropogenic/curved/??
