Discussion: layer of fill in space 159, removed in order to release wall 400 to be knbocked down. Contained a lot of brick and plaster especially in the southern part. The bricky infill was dark brown, matching the bricks in the lower half of wall 400, but nit the upper half, neither did they match any of the bricks in the other walls surrounding space 159. 4190 extended into space 160 and under wall 403 and 405. Towards the southern end (space 160) it came down on to darker material which appears to be at the level of the base of the walls. In the northern half some of this darker material wa also taken off. The material under 4190 is probably the same as the material under 4340. This underlying layer goes under spaces 160 and 159.

Recognition: fırst layer of 1999 season, brown sterıle fıll

Definition: defıned by wall 73 to north, to easr by wall 401, south by wall 402 (amended relatıonshıp in post-ex), west by wall 400

Execution: mattock

Condition: dry

Consistency: fairly firm to very firm.

Colour: yellow brown with more orange brown in places and quite dark brown in others (bricky).

Texture: silty clay loam, areas of more clayey-plaster/brick

Bedding: massive

Inclusions: whole clay ball 2% but concentration in NW corner, obsidian less than 2% (largest 2cm), stone less 2%, charcoal less 2% small frags bone less 2% (occ teeth), brick less 2%, plaster 2 - 5%, some phytoliths NW corner, southern end plaster and brick 10 - 20 - 50 % large frags

Post-depositional Features: a lot of animal holes in the fill so possible contamination

Basal Boundary: arbitrary, not yet taken down to next interface, taken down far enough to release west awll 400. Seems to be coming down onto darker brown, more clayey fill, some of which was also taken off towards northern end. Basal boundary then is abrupt - gradual, distinct, faint and bumpy

Unit description: Flot sample 2 (2367), >4mm, 100% This unit is the fill under the floor excavated in space 159 (Annex to Building 6) last year. It is a medium sized unit ranging in colour from black to light brown, but largely medium brown with light staining. Fragmentation is mainly predepositional. Some of the smaller bone is burnt, and a small amount is weathered. It contains mainly sheep-size bones but also has cattle, horse, dog?, a small mammal -and two fragments of human skull. The flot sample was relatively dense, but entirely small fragments of non-diagnostic bone. Most of it was 03 size. There was a fair amount of small burnt material but no digestion. It was a bit dirtier and more rolled than normal fill and the fragment size was very small, but not very battered and not too much edge destruction. Consistent with the idea of sub-floor packing/fill. NR 2003: Found another bag of dry-sieved material, moderate in size. It has more sheep-size but a substantial amount of large mammal bone, much of it in relatively large pieces. The surface condition is variable. Looks like multiple origins, with a little that is quite fresh and most redeposited. There are fragments of a scapula and pelvis from a human infant. Do these come from a burial? They seem too fragile to have survived kicking around in the fill. Last Number = 176
