Unit 4209
Category: cluster dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: obsidian hoard
Data Category Information: Location: building; Material: obsidian; Deposition: primary deposition; Basal Spit: worked bone
Dimensions: 0.24 x 0.24m, 0.09m thick
Description: Cluster of obsidian lying within infilling (4205).
Discussion: Tightly packed group of large roughly shaped pieces of obsidian and part of a bone ring. Appear to have been deposited in an organic container during infilling (4205). The cleaness of the surrounding fill and the way the shape changed as they went down argue against it being in a cut from above. Could be related to 4205 X.1 and cluster (4210).
Discovered by hitting very hard with a mattock.
The broken bone ring has interesting implications as it is unlikely that it had any recovery value, therefore hoard was not intended to be recovered?
nail points 918.64/974.9, 918..77/975.34.
NB/ originall allocated to earlier B.9/Space 166 but post re allocated during publication work (08/04/08)

Unit description: Flot Sample 2393 This unit number is for the obsidian hoard found in the fill of Building 9. Craig did not believe that it was associated with Building 2. The bone consists of 10 bone chips, all less than 1/2 a cm. Three of them are burnt. The colour ranges from mid- to dark brown.
