Unit 4238
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: wall construction material
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: brick&mortar; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: - material used in construction of wall 406 - readily distinguished from (4237). Not easy to identify whether material forming the bricks or the mortar for this wall - didn't appear to be consistent. However where we drew section 99/108 - (4238) was definitely the mortar.
Recognition: Recognised by colour and texture contrast to 4237.
Definition: Defined by boundary with 4237.
Execution: Sampled by excavating along horizons between unit and 4237 - trowel/small pick.
Condition: damp
Consistency: compact
Colour: mid to dark brown - occ. small pale orange blotches within clay
Texture: clay
Bedding: massive
Inclusions: -occ. flecks/small orange blotches - iron panning material ??
Post-depositional Features: - salt flecks
Basal Boundary: constructional/very sharp/prominent/smooth - flat, but courses dipping down from east to west towards western end of the wall.
