Dimensions: 1.62 E-W by 0.195 by 0.05m max. depth 

 

Discussion: (4503), as with (4502), appears to be an E-W band of material, in this case, a slightly ashey occupation/ bedding? layer-that has only survived in a strip along the edge of wall F.482. This is probably due to subsidence (now visible toward the E. limit of F.482), which has allowed these layers to survive within a shallow E-W hollow, whilst further south, they have either been worn away or purposefully removed - possibly before the laying of new floor surfaces above.
Toward the E. limit of (4503), the deposit thickened, from an averae 10-30mm, to a 50mm max., where it contained a substantial lens of mid. gray clayey silt (about 0.20m E-W ) . It seemed slightly odd, and out of place, but I presume it is part of the same layer, and not an 'intrusion', particularly as it's texture is very similar. 

 

Consistency: firm 

Colour: v.slightly grayish-light brown 

Texture: clayey silt ( approx. 25/65 ) slightly ashy ( up to 10% ) 

Bedding: massive 

Inclusions: occ. to mod. charcoal flecks <2% , mod., v.small, white siliceous plant remains. one small frag. of burnt bone 

Post-depositional Features: none 

Basal Boundary: anthropogenic, abrupt, distinct, smooth to slightly uneven
