Unit 4504
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: floor layers
Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: white clay; Deposition: composite (floor/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)
Dimensions: 2.69 N-s by 2.49 by 0.05m max. depth
Discussion: (4504) was a band of floor layers recorded under one unit number. Thickness varied from 10-50mm, 30mm about average. The number, and type of layers visible, varied considerably throughout the deposit, dependent on differing degreees of wear. The max. no. of layers I could clearly detect by eye was nine, but I suspect that under magnification, there would be many more micro layers visible. As is usual, the layers comprised of very thin ( approx. 1-3mm ), white plaster floors with thicker ( approx. 3-10mm ), levelling/bedding, clayey silt layers inbetween.
Consistency: firm
Colour: off-white plaster/light to mid. browns/ mid to dark grays
Texture: clayey silts (approx. 30 -40/60-70), clay/silt/lime plasters - too thin to gauge %
Bedding: layered
Inclusions: occ. charcoal fl. <2%, v. occ., small, obsid., bone, fired material, clay ball? occ. to mod., v.small, white siliceous plant remains <5%
Post-depositional Features: trunc. at east + west by Mellart's excavations, to the south by cut (4510). There's a possible post-indentation to ward the south - see plan
Basal Boundary: anthropogenic, abrupt to gradual, distinct to faint, smooth to slightly uneven

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: Flot sample 2843 - completely analyzed Generally light brown with a small amount of burnt material. Average size is less than 1 cm, nothing is identifiable to element. There is very little material and it is very untrampled looking - more fill-like. Flot sample 4504, samlpe#3, 100% sorted was also competely recorded. The only identifiable bone was a distal sesamoid of 014 category. Very fragmented and nearly all bones are under 1cm in size.
