Discussion: 4783 was a compound layer made up of floor surfaces, occupation debris and make-up layers beneath 4780 that were in use at the same time as the oven F529 to the south west and the partition F528 to the north of it. It incorporated at least one floor surface, its associated make-up layer and various lenses of mixed debris relating to the use of the area. The latter included ashy deposits, organic residue, charcoal rich clay deposits and some more mixed gritty deposits. A leaf shaped arrowhead was also amoungst these deposits. It shows that the area was used as somewhere for waste deposition at this time, as it was in its later occupation (see 4780). The floor surface that was visible was very patchy and insubstantial but appeared to be contained in the area defined by the partition F528 and the contemporary oven F529. This implies that these features were used to define the "dirty" area of the building at this time.
Consistency: mainly friable, but firmer in places
Colour: varied - yellowish-white, rich orange brown, pale orange-white, mid grey-brown, dark grey and pale grey
Texture: varied - clay and silty clay towards the edges (especially to the south), ash, sandy silt and ashy clay elsewhere
Bedding: compound layered
Inclusions: varied between lenses - charcoal, bone, obsidian, ash, hackberry, coprolite, shell, clay, burnt clay, stone, tiny pebbles and plaster
Post-depositional Features: salt encrustation
Basal Boundary: clear and sharp for most of its extent, although the interleaving layers at the northern and south western fringes of the deposit made the basal boundary less clearly definable here. The boundary was smooth, but slightly irregular in places, sloping from south to north and from west to east.
