Discussion: 4791 was a compound layer consisting of layers of floor surface, make-up and occupation debris, which relate to the use of the area contemporary to the use of the oven F ??? in the 'dirty' south east corner of building 23. The extent of this deposit directly underlies that of the later 'dirty deposits in the area. This once again shows continuity in the use of the area over a long period. It also suggests that the same 'dirty' area was defined informally in the earlier use of the building before the partition F528 and oven F529 were constructed and defined the area more formally. As in the later phases of use, the area seems to have been used for the dumping of oven rake-out, food waste and other indeterminable occupation debris and intermittently leveled using mixed clayey layers. For most of the extent of the deposit, there were no clear floor surfaces remaining, however in the north east corner there was evidence that at least three floor surfaces existed in the area and extended into the clean area to the north.
