Dimensions: 0.19m (E-W), 0.51m (N-S), 0.05m deep 

 

Discussion: 4970 was a small strip of red, silty material that appears to have formed a divide between dirty and clean areas to the east and west of it in the southern part of space 178/ building 23. Interestingly, it lay almost exactly beneath the remnant 'arm' of oven superstructure 4787 (F529), that seems to have served a similar purpose in the later phases of use of the building. 

 

Consistency: friable 

Colour: reddish grey-brown 

Texture: silt 

Bedding: massive 

Inclusions: occasional tiny flecks of charcoal, phytoliths and plaster 

Post-depositional Features: salt encrustation 

Basal Boundary: sharp, smoth and distinct, sloping from west to east
