Unit 4845
Category: layer dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: burning event
Data Category Information: Description: fire spots (non-structured); Deposition: homogeneous; Basal Spit: basal deposit
Dimensions: 4.6m+ w-e, 2.2m+ n-s, 2 to 3 cm thick
Discussion: Distinctive in-situ burning layer which covers whole area. Some form of general fire, possibly low intensity smouldering. Some greyish ash over yellowish osidation over black burnt layer. Contains lots of obsidian and bone which has gone black. Deliberate burning of rubbish / vegetation for hygeine / smell / volume reduction?
Recognition: distinctive burnt deposit

Finds Room Information:
All material from site passes through the finds room for washing and separating before it is passed onto the various lab teams. The finds room keeps a basic inventory of what is found. A finds material type list is given here. Further analytical detail maybe provided by the Lab Team data below.

Unit description: A burnt layer from the midden in space 181. The material seems vey similar to the midden layer above and below (4844 and 4846) but it is all carbonized and burnt. The burning appears to be in situ and some of the bone appears to have been burnt in reducing circumstances - probably in the soil. Completed: flot >4mm, smpl no 3, flot no, 2976. Diagnostics only. Almost all burnt. Contains most of articulated sheep/goat ankle, as well as 2 O/C ulnae and a Bos MT. The unit is fairly small, apparently a thin but widely dispersed band across the space. Taxa include sheep/goat, equid, pig and bos. Elements are largely teeth, feet and long bone shaft fragments. There are also three pieces of worked bone - polished ribs perhaps of the 'needle' variety. Also 2 bone beads out of a necklace of mostly stone beads. 4mm flotation sample #4, 100% sorted, was recorded for diagnostics only at a later date. Almost all of the material was burnt at low temperatures and the bone was generally highly fragmented and dominated by sheep sized animals. Last number = 152Figurine Records: Yes
