Unit 5094
Category: layer dug in 1999

Data Category Information: Location: building; Description: general; Material: non-white laid floor; Deposition: composite (floor/bedding/plaster/packing/occupation)
Dimensions: 1.6m e-w x 0.87m n-s x 0.09m
Discussion: 5094 was a compound layer made up of various apparetly contignous layers of floor make-up or 'packing'. The most substantial component was a thick grey-brown clayey deposit to the north-west. However this interleved with other clayey deposits to the south and east and since they were interpretatively similar and apparently roughly contemporary, they were recovered as a single unit. They seem to represent an attempt to build up the floors on the eastern area of building 23 to the height of the wall which underlay this building.
Consistency: Friable
Colour: Varied-homogeneous, mid grey/ brown to the north and west of the deposit. Flecked with plaster, clay and charcoal to the south, with some larger patches of plaster
Texture: Silty clay
Bedding: Compound layered-it included 2 apparently contemporary deposits that interleved where they met.
Inclusions: 5-10% plaster; 2% burnt oven debris; occasional stones, obsidian, charcoal, small lumps of clay and bone
Post-depositional Features: Salt encrustation in places
Basal Boundary: Sharp and distinct. Smooth where it overlay mixed clayey deposits to the south, more regular where it overlay oven to the north west
