Unit 7230
Category: Layer dug in 2001
Area: Trench I

Data Category Information: none
Dimensions: 1.57m NE-SW, 0.62 NW-SE, 0.13m deep
Discussion: Remains of coffin. Wood surviving in places and taken as sample for ID (S2). A number of nails also recovered, some in situ. Where the wood had decayed the coffin was represented by a dark brown stain. In places, particularly the southern and central part of the coffin large areas of phytolith were present and are believed to represent the decayed shroud which covered the body. This was also sampled (S1). A curious aspect to the coffin was a box shaped addition at the eastern end. This was of wood and nail construction and appeared to be part of the coffin rather than a separate box. This was given an x-number (x10).
