Unit 7949
Category: layer dug in 2004
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: collapsed oven,oven dump
Data Category Information: In Situ: non in-situ; Location: feature; Description: oven; Material: brick; Deposition: heterogeneous
Discussion: Full-on sampling.
This unit was dug on press day. The boundaries were all easily recognizable except in the NW corner, where a few additional layers were expsed. The whole unit was sent for floatation. The burnt bricks came off in chunks sometimes with the necessarily hard trowel scraping. It is possible that this unit was more representative of oven rake-out, or perhaps even a collapsed oven. The basal boundary was not burnt or any sign of burning.
Thickness of unit estimated in PX (DE 18/07/09)
