Unit 12365
Category: Layer dug in 2005
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Wall mortar
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: mortar; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: Partition wall towards E end of building 54 was floating on fill. Wall was extremely sandy in texture and it had eroded considerably. Grey plaster/clay building material was visible at bottom of cut, especially near joint w/ north wall, southern corner.
It was difficult to distinguish dry brick from mortar in the early morning.
Volume roughly estimated and unsure whether any was dry sieved (FS 30/06/09)
Recognition: Mortar grey, w/ few inclusions, very compacted
Definition: Clearly different from brick. Basal fill contained more inclusions.
Execution: Trowel
Condition: Hot
Consistency: Compact
Colour: Mid-dark grey
Texture: Compact silty clay
Bedding: Layered around bricks
Inclusions: Some bone (2%), charcoal (5%)
Post-depositional Features: Insect holes, rots, rodent hole, salt deposits
Basal Boundary: Sharp, with some organic material within border
