Unit 15185
Category: Cut dug in 2010
Area: Trench 5
Interpretive Categories: Byzantine pit
Data Category Information: none
Dimensions: NS 2.3m - EW 2.4m - 1m
Discussion: JMR 23.8.2010: Cut of Byzantine pit F. 3331. Sides very concave, looks bell- or bubble-like. Pit not excavated to the end - base of cut not reached in 2010. Cut disturbed F. 3301 and 3302, which are undercut concavely by quite a bit, and roomfill U. 15176 in sp. 454. Cut (disturbance) only noticed at the level of 15176 after removing fill U. 15165, but cut and pit must have been present high up - see drawing 10/511. Upper part very near to topsoil, therefore not visible.
Fill / buttresses very distinct from fill of pit F. 3331, thus cut recognized very easily and probably correct.
NOTE THAT TOTAL STATION POINTS TAKEN ON 18.8. ARE INCORRECT - THIS CONCERNS LEVELS FOR THIS UNIT.
HLS 7.8.2011: The cut of F.3331 was relatively easily recognised, as the pit cut the walls and buttresses of Sp.454 on the northern and eastern sides. The southern side of the cut left the upper part of F.3351 untouched, but cut into the lower part. The pit seems to have itself been cut by burial F.3343. The base cut was not easily defined and it is ambigious as to whether there was a layer of undisturbed room fill from Space 454 found between the cut of the pit and the plastered surface U.16932. The depth of this fill would have been small, though. On the western side, the pit did not cut the wall of Space 454 and left perhaps 10-20cm of potentially undisturbed room fill (U.16960). The edges of the cut are concave, mostly substantially undercutting the surrounding walls of Space 454 especially on the eastern side. Similarly, on this side a line of plaster along that side (correlating with the eastern wall of Space 310) connects to an area of the pit that may be a chunk of wall left uncut by the pit. The base of the pit is, as mentioned, ambiguous but an ability to "peel" off soil on the level may indicate the base of the pit which is mostly flat, with undisturbed room fill beneath (U.16933).
Recognition: colour, consistency of fill / cut mainly seen when it reaches walls
Definition: clear towards buttresses and roomfill
Execution: pick, trowel
Condition: under shelter
Shape: roughly circular/ovoid
Sides: concave, undercutting
Base Break: gradual
Base: flat but uneven
Orientation: n/a
