Discussion: Mudbrick in mudbrick wall F.5057, the eastern wall of space 341.

06/08/12 - Excavation resumed by JHB
Unit 16869 is the construction material of buttress f. 5057. The material appeared at first to be mostly homogenous fill, but when a clean section was cut and misted with a sprayer, fuzzy, regular horizontal lines appeared. These lines of alternating brown and slightly lighter brown are interpreted as construction slabs. This is in opposition to mudbrick (as seen in f. 5053/4 of b. 98), which has clear mortar lines and brick outlines. The slab material appears to have been made with fill from an earlier Neolithic source, possibly Catal Eat mound or lower down the West Mound. The slabs may represent a process of construction characterized by ramming earth and occaisionally laying in a layer of binder (similar to mortar). U. 16869 incudes all of this construction fill down the point where the exterior of the buttress f. 5057 is nio longer plastered and includes and includes all of this construction. Fill down to the point where the exterior of the buttress f. 5957 is no longer plastered and includes larger finds in the fill (the unit below is 16998).
Comment JMR: This unit was dug before we recognised phasing in the buttress, so it contains materials of F.5057 and F.3372 together.
