Unit 1906
Category: Cut dug in 1996
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: plaster lined pit
Data Category Information: Description: scoop
Discussion: plaster lined pit cut very similar to unit (1445) / (1442) F34, undercut and up against a wall; possibly for containing liquid. However, there is no certainty that this is actually attached to any floors; the cut first appeared below floors in the orange sands make-up layer (1434), if so it is part of the building construction and not a 'living' feature; perhaps its a plasterers pit (as F34?). On the other hand, units (1901) (1900) lay directly over (1905) (1906) and the fills (1901) (1905) were identified; (1901) was cut/or contemporary with the lower floors, (1429) and perhaps given the undercut the feature (1905) (1906) may be the same as (1901) and (1900) then the pit is contemporary with the use of the building in its earliest phase and may be more likely to be water (liquid container or such thing. However, its method of construction remains problematic - how did they a)dig such an undercut pit? b)how did they plaster it?
