Unit 20062
Category: Layer dug in 2014
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: Mortar to wall extension
Data Category Information: In Situ: in situ; Location: wall/blocking; Material: mortar; Deposition: homogeneous
Description: Unit is thick layers of grayish mortar between wall bricks U. 18911. The mortar is laid in long vertical deposits with a few thin horitizontal deposits between smaller bricks at the top.
Discussion: This unit was identified in 2010 when building was first excavated but a unit was not assigned until this year for excavation. It is interesting that mortar for this wall extension was laid mostly vertically instead of horizontally between bricks laid lengthwise (the common practice of laying bricks at Catal). It's possible the bricks were laid this way because it was a more efficient means of constructing the extension quickly.
