Unit 21163
Category: Cut dug in 2014
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: Building structural cut
Data Category Information: Description: pit
Discussion: ADDED IN 2015:
After excavating the lower deposits we agreed that this feature was not actually a cut, but a shallow platform extending to the S of the building. The southern deposits were therefore never cut, but envisaged as an elevated feature, in this case a platform.
The edge of the cut was clearly visible after removing the building infill U.21113, as a long line extending in a W-E axis, separating the grey floors on the S from the infill U.21162.
The cut is quite shallow (ca. 7cm deep), and at the bottom of it lies a hearth (E side) and grey floors covered in ashes (U. 21170). The S edge of the cut shows evidence of ash deposition and staining, behind which grey floors are visible in section. It is unclear why the inhabitants of this house cut through the floors. The cut has been carefully done, and giving the steep inclination of the plaster floors towards the S (up to ca.30º slope), it is possible that the purpose of the cut was to prevent ashes and other combustion by-products from the hearth from spreading all over the building interior.
Shape: Rectangular with curved corners.
Sides: Vertical.
Base Break: 90º
Base: 15-20º slope towards the S.
Orientation: Long axis E-W.
