Unit 2245

Category: Skeleton    dug in 1997

Area: North

Data Category Information: none

Discussion: This skeleton was in fair condition generally except the skull was crushed before excavation and broke apart when we tried to remove it in a block. Like the skeleton in F.153 the tibia are cut by the baulk. We left them in for removal later. The skeleton shows signs of a high degree of post depositional disturbance. Some of the ribs were poking out of the profile, 5-10 cm above the rest of the skeleton and 15-20 cm out of place. Rodents are the most likely cause of this although we haven't seen obvious rodent holes in the cut. The burial appears to have slumped down into the midden below a couple of cm's particularly in the central part of the body. Excavation of the lower part of the burial (east of the baulk) produced a few foot bones, as well as a clear rodent hole.
08/10/98 - During excavation in the baulk we encountered a ring (a toe ring?). It is green, could be copper or bone. It was marked as X1 in the fill (2235). As well as X2 a circular iron object.
The section of the skeleton under the baulk was excavated in '98. Some more bones were recovered along with 2 rings and a nail. The bones were mostly of the left leg and the feet. We have almost the whole lower left leg and left foot. No ther toes were found.
The bones were in a very fragile condition and some of them fragmented on removal.

Unit description: A small unit with no diagnostics except some human bones (a rib end, third phalanx from hand, carpal, possible long bone fragment and a few other indeterminate - to me at least - pieces). Human bones have been passed on. Otherwise the unit consists of a few 03 and 07 size long bones, an 07 pelvis fragment, an 03 skull fragment, mandible fragment and tooth fragment. Rest is indeterminate with fresh breaks. The old breaks show pieces at least 3 cm long, with surfaces at stage 3. Nothing is burnt. In general, this is a scrappy mixed collection that is difficult to interpret (and there is no unit sheet to give context) but seems to have been buried relatively fast, since it's not very weathered/rolled. NR 2009: A few more pieces returned from human remains, indicating this is burial fill.
