Unit 30048
Category: Layer dug in 2016
Area: North
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Deposition: homogeneous
Description: Eroded. Irregular shaped in plan. Slight concavity at Centre.
Discussion: Within F.7957, Hearth, U30048 sealed ash (?) rich deposit 30049 and a very similar day silt 30051. Other than the light brown/ red colouration there were no other indications of exposure to heat and this may be the result of the conflagration that consumed B.131. Delimited by F7957 U 30048 has been classified as a fill. Very clear interfaces at 30049 and 30051 may indicate a significant gap in depositional episodes (hat allowed the surfaces of 30049 and 30051 to become consolidated. A tentative interpretation this would fit with the reuse of F7957 suggested by 30049 30050 and 30054. Lack of scorching suggests that 30048 is not a deposit resulting from use of F7957 as a heath. Was 30048 a tertiary deposit that accumulated after 7957 was abandoned? The regular nature of the deposit suggests not. If 30048 was the product of the use of F7957 then 7957 did not use fire.
