Unit 30092
Category: Layer dug in 2016
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: burial fill
Data Category Information: Location: cut; Description: burial; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: this unit represente fourth layer of fill burial F.7982. in this layer the beging of the emergence of human bons, skul…
Lowest fill of burial f.7982 which surrounds skeleton 32324. Heat affected which has preserved some organic remains from the body which have been sampled with the skeleton but may aIso be present in this deposit. Contains charcoal, plaster & some mudbrick frags with a similar composition to the floor & levelling deposits it was cut through showing that it was probably backfilled with this material.
Unit was prioritized to see how similar this burial was to the neighboring burial 7956 as the skeletons were buried in similar pos3itions. The botanical remains were found to be of a low level density, similar to other burial fills, suggesting that he burial was not wrapped in making or other organic remains. Chipped shore & faunal also reported normal levels & types of material for a burial fill. The animal bones were reported to be less burnt than the human remains, perhaps indicative of flesh/ organic material burning on the corpse, rarer than redeposited, clean animal bones?
The beads found with the body were a wide variety of types, including steel, stone, boar tusk, deer tooth & worked cow/sheep bone.
The wooden bowl found with the body was maple wood and well made, with a that base & 3-4cm thick sides.
It was also noted that the fill of the burial was similar in character to a dirty floor, and so some of the floor surfaces on the platform were prioritized for botanical remains in order to see if they similar to dirty floors-32344, 32365, 32371.
