Unit 30239

Category: Cut    dug in 2013

Area: TPC

Interpretive Categories: Pit cut

Data Category Information: Description: pit

Discussion: The cut for pit f. 3986 was extremely difficult to distinguish, as it thad been filled by u. 30225, a great deal of redeposited Neolithic builidng material, then subsequently cut into by f. 3987, a robber's trench or building material retrieval trench-- then filled again by u. 30226, the fill for this trench. The cut [30239] has evidently dug into f. 3948, a highly disturbed and burned Roman wall, as the bricks roughly follow the outline of the cut (see sketch). Despite the modifications to the pit cut, it has many of the same characteristics of the late pit cuts found in many areas of the site where Classical remains have been documented.

Shape: mostly round-- flattened at south edge where it cuts into f. 3948

Sides: undercut

Base Break: sharp as it was dug-- although the actual basal boundary may have been passed

Base: flat-- but see #5; likely it was actually sloped downward toward the east

Orientation: N/A
