Unit 32386
Category: Layer dug in 2016
Area: North
Interpretive Categories: fill hearth
Data Category Information: Location: feature; Description: hearth; Deposition: homogeneous
Discussion: Shallow pit in SW end B.131, part of a small cluster of inter-cutting features in this area (alongside features 7997 & 7998). Large amount of charcoal within feature suggests that it may be a hearth, although there is no clear scorching from use (although the whole area may be scorched by later burning, so it may not be visible). It does not seem to have the layered ash layers characteristic of other hearth features that have been excavated in this building & others, so if it is a hearth or fire pit, it does not seem to have been in use for a prolonged period.
Consistency: Moderately compact
Colour: Dark gray brown
Texture: Sit by clay
Bedding: homogenous
Inclusions: Frequent charcoal (10-15%), especially at top of feature
Post-depositional Features: Burrowing, roots, burning, truncated by later features
Basal Boundary: clear
