Unit 4113
Category: cut dug in 1999
Area: South
Interpretive Categories: oven construction cut
Data Category Information: Description: oven
Dimensions: 0.86m (N-S) , 0.75m (E-W) , 0.25m deep
Discussion: Broadly sub-rectangular shallow cut, constructed to take oven structure f269, in the manner as shown in sketch (A). Appears to be deepest at the south end adjacent to wall, though this maybe due to a greater depth of underlying deposit lapping pu against the wall. Appears similar to cuts for ovens f450 and f451 in the SW corner of space 117. The structure of the ovens suggests a shallow cut with oven wall or superstructure constructed over and around the cut. In this feature the structure was then packed and a floor established c. 10-12 cms. above base of cut.
Possibly the cut was for an earlier feature of unknown functionm later utilized as an oven, hence the levelling material 3998 being used to raise the oven floor approximately the surrounding floor level.
Recognition: Edge between oven wall 4108 and lower deposits
Definition: Edge between different deposits
Execution: Trowel
Condition: complete, sub-rectangular shaped, does not appear truncated
Shape: sub-rectangular
Sides: irregular
Base Break: gradual
Base: irregular
Orientation: n-s
